Bernhard Franz Karl Adolf Gottvertrau von Hülsen
(20.04.1865 - 21.04.1950)
place of birth:  Cosel, Schlesien
Königreich Preußen:  Generalmajor

Bernhard von Hülsen served as an Imperial German division commander during the Great War. Having begun his military career in 1884, von Hülsen spent most of his time serving in Guards units. One year prior to general mobilization, he was selected to command 5. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß headquartered in Berlin-Spandau and led these troops into battle one year later.

Within a month, Oberst von Hülsen was transferred to work as Admiral von Schröder's Chief of Staff at Marine-Division headquarters in Flanders, remaining in this office as the unit was later reformed into a Corps. Later, after having commanded a infantry brigrade for six months, Generalmajor von Hülsen was given command of 231. Infanterie-Division, a formation he oversaw until the November 1918 ceasefire. The general is better known for having later commanded his namesake unit Freikorps Hülsen during the Weimar Republic. Upon the dissolution of the Freikorps into the Reichswehr, he became head of the Reichswehr-Brigade 3 in Potsdam. He was ultimately brevetted to Generalleutnant on 25.09.1920 after having earlier retired from active duty. Bernard's brother Walter also served during the Great War as a Generalleutnant and recipient of the Pour le Mérite medal.
