General Karl Freiherr von Horn (also referred to as Carl von Horn) served for almost 50 years as an officer of the Royal Bavarian Army. Having entered the military in 1838, he fought with the Bavarians during the War of 1866 against Prussia. During the Franco-Prussian War, von Horn fought alongside the Prussians, serving as Chief of Staff to Bavaria's II. Armee-Korps commander Freiherr von Hartmann.

After the War of 1870-71, von Horn commanded the brigade occupying the city of Metz and was promoted to General-Lieutenant. He then commanded Bavaria's 4. Infanterie-Division in Würzburg and from 1881 to 1887 commanded Bavaria's I. Armee-Korps in Munich. During this time, he additionally served as Adjutant General to King Ludwig II.  General der Infanterie von Horn was placed on active reserve status in 1887. He and his wife Eva nee Auernheimer had a daughter and two sons, one of which was the future Generaloberst Karl Graf von Horn, Bavarian Minister of War from 1905 through 1912.
