Royal Saxon artillery officer Georg Hoffmann initially served during the Great War on the general staff of XII. Armeekorps headquarters. For his exemplary performance in September 1915 during battle in the Champagne area, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. He later served as commander of a Saxon cavalry regiment and as chief of staff at XVII. Reservekorps headquarters.
