Generalleutnant Richard von Hößlin served as a cavalry officer in the Royal
Bavarian military. Richard was born into the Bavarian nobility, the son of
Colonel Moritz von Hößlin (1808–1881) and Frederike von Süßkind-Schwendi
(1830–1882). Immediately following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71,
von Hößlin entered military service, joining the Bavarian cavalry's 4.
Chevaulegers-Regiment „König“. As an Oberstleutnant, he served in 1898
and 1899 as chief of staff in Prince Arnulf's I. Armeekorps in Munich. In 1903,
he was promoted to Generalmajor and took command of Bavaria's 3rd Cavalry
Brigade headquartered in Dieuze.
In 1905, von Hößlin
retired from active duty and was awarded the brevet rank of General-Lieutenant. After
leaving the military, he
served as Swabia's official representative for the military training and education
of young cadets. General von Hößlin's grandson Roland was
a major in the Wehrmacht and resistance fighter who was executed in 1944 at
Plötzensee Prison.
