Generalleutnant Richard von Hößlin served as a cavalry officer in the Royal
Bavarian military. Richard was born into the Bavarian nobility, the son of
Colonel Moritz von Hößlin (1808–1881) and Frederike von Süßkind-Schwendi
(1830–1882). Immediately following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71,
von Hößlin entered military service, joining the Bavarian cavalry's 4.
Chevaulegers-Regiment „König“. As an Oberst-Lieutenant, he served in 1898
and 1899 as chief of staff in Prince Arnulf's I. Armee-Korps in Munich. In 1903,
he was promoted to Generalmajor and took command of Bavaria's 3. Kavallerie-Brigade headquartered in Dieuze.
In 1905, von Hößlin
retired from active duty and was awarded the brevet rank of General-Lieutenant. After
leaving the military, he
served as Swabia's official representative for the military training and education
of young cadets. General von Hößlin's grandson Roland was
a major in the Wehrmacht and resistance fighter who was executed in 1944 at
Plötzensee Prison.
