Benno Hann von Weyhern was a Prussian cavalry officer who commanded II.
Armeekorps, headquartered in Stettin, from 1871 to 1881. Hann von Weyhern, whose
father had served as a Saxon general, entered the military in 1821. At the age
of 13, he was sent to the Dresden Cadet School but changed over to the Prussian
cavalry ranks when he graduated, joining up with the 3. Husaren-Regiment. In
1848, he took part in the First Schleswig War (Schleswig-Holsteinischer
Krieg).
After a brief stint with the military forces of
Schleswig-Holstein, Hann von Weyhern returned to Prussian service with the 2.
Kavallerie-Division, going to war with this unit during Austro-Prussian War
of 1866 (der Deutsche Krieg). In 1870, during Prussia's war with France,
Hann von Weyhern's troops were engaged in the battles at Gravelotte,
Dijon, and the Siege of Paris. For his actions, he was awarded
both 1st and 2nd classes of the Iron Cross. After the hostilities, he was
charged with heading up II. Armeekorps until his retirement in 1881. His son
Benno Ferdinand Richard Hann von Weyhern also served as a general officer with
the Prussian military.
