Prussian cavalry officer Prince Friedrich was the son of Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and
thus the brother of King Carol I. of Romania. Friedrich married Princess
Louisa von Thurn und Taxis in 1879 but had no children. Upon entering
military service, he took part in the Danish War of 1864, as well as
the Austro-Prussian War of 1866.
As a Rittmeister
in the 1. Garde-Dragoner-Regiment, Friedrich took part in the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870-71, where he merited the Iron Cross 2nd Class. In 1888, he was
decorated with Prussia's highest order of chivalry, the Schwarzer
Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle.) At the height of his military career, Prince Friedrich
replaced Maximilian von Versen as commander of Prussia's III.
Armee-Korps headquartered in Berlin (1893 to 1896.) He died in Munich
in 1904 and was interred at Erlöserkirche in Sigmaringen-Hedingen.
