Kuno Freiherr von Falkenstein served during Prussia's inter-war years as

an orphan in the Ludwigsburg region and went to high school in Stuttgart. At 15,
he enrolled the Württemberg Army's war academy. He was commissioned in 1859 as a
Sekonde-Lieutenant with the Pionierkorps and then deployed to Italy as a
participant in the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859 (Sardinischer Krieg).
He fought against the Prussians during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866
(Deutscher Krieg) and was engaged in battles at Aschaffenburg and
Tauberbischofsheim.
After the signing of the Peace of Prague,
Falkenstein was absorbed into the Prussian forces and spent time serving in
Berlin with the Great General Staff. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71
(Deutsch-Französischer Krieg) saw him attached to the Field Division staff, and
he was engaged in several important battles, including at Wörth,
Sedan, and the Siege of Paris. Following the hostilities, he
returned to Stuttgart to function as aide-de-camp from 1873 to 1874 to
Württemberg's King Karl I. He was transferred to Berlin in 1880 where he
served as General Groß-Schwarzhoff's chief of staff at III. Armeekorps
headquarters. Falkenstein's first command came in September 1885 when he was
sent to Frankfurt a.O. to head up Leib-Grenadier-Regiment „König Friedrich
Wilhelm III.“ (1. Brandenburgisches) Nr. 8. With a promotion to
Generalmajor on 22 August 1888, he was selected as Generaladjutant SM

General von Falkenstein was transferred in November 1890 to
command 52. Infanterie-Brigade (2. Koniglich-Württembergische) in Ludwigsburg.
He commanded 3. Division in Stettin from 1891 to 1892 and then returned to
Stuttgart as Diensttuender Generaladjutant SM des Königs (Senior
Adjutant General in HM Wilhelm II. von Württemberg's court). On 4 April 1896,
Falkenstein relieved General von Blume as commanding general of XV. Armeekorps
headquarters in Strasbourg, Alsace. He remained in command until he passed away
in May 1899.
