Royal Saxon general Hans von Carlowitz headed up
the Kingdom of Saxony's War Ministry during
peacetime, from 1899 to 1901. He entered military service in 1870 and
immediately deployed to France to fight in the Franco-Prussian War of
1870-71. He saw action in battles at Gravelotte, Sedan and Saint-Quentin, also
taking part in the final siege of Paris. He later served as King Albert's
aide-de-camp from 1893 to 1895. In 1898 he was selected to be Prinz Georg's
chief of staff at XII. Armeekorps headquarters in Dresden, followed by his stint
as Saxon War Minister. Carlowitz retired from active duty in 1902 at the age of
54 and died two years later.
