Prussian cavalry officer Adolf von Bülow
succeeded Sigismund von Schlichting in 1896 as
commander of Prussia's XIV. Armeekorps. Earlier in his career, von Bülow
had served as personal military instructor to young Prince Wilhelm von
Hohenzollern, and continued as his aide-de-camp when the Prince acceded to the
throne as Kaiser Wilhelm II. in
1888.
Adolf von Bülow
was initially associated with the 3. Garde-Ulanen-Regiment in Potsdam and
was a particpant in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71
(Deutsch-Französischer Krieg). Later in his career, and with a promotion to General der Kavallerie, von
Bülow was assigned on 27 January 1895 as commanding general of VIII. Armeekorps
headquarters in Koblenz. He retained this posting until 2 January 1896 when he
was transferred to Karlsruhe to take command of XIV. Armeekorps headquarters.
General von Bülow was simultaneously selected to serve as Generaladjutant
at Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s headquarters. He retired from active duty (zur
Disposition gestellt) on 27 January 1902.
