General Albert Freiherr von Barnekow was in command of Prussia's I. Army
Corps in Königsberg for a ten-year period (1873-1883) following the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He entered active duty in 1826, enjoying
several years of peacetime as he progressed in his military career. Having
reached the rank of Generalmajor, Barnekow was involved in the Danish War
of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg) but did not lead combat troops in that
conflict. Two years later, however, we headed up 2nd Infantry Brigade during the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and was awarded
the Pour le Mérite for his outstanding leadership.
As Prussia waged war on France in 1870, Generalleutnant von
Barnekow headed up the 16th Infantry Division, a unit which was engaged at
Spichern, Mars-la-Tour, Gravelotte, Amiens, and St. Quentin. For
his meritorious actions, he was decorated with the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class,
as well as the oak leaves to his previous Blue Max medal. After returning to
Germany, Freiherr von Barnekow was transferred to Königsberg in 1873 to replace
General von Manteuffel as commanding general of I. Armeekorps, a posting he held
until retirement in 1883.
