Christof Gottlieb Albert Freiherr von Barnekow
(02.08.1809 - 24.05.1895)
place of birth:  Hohenwalde
Königreich Preußen:  KG,  General der Infanterie

General Albert Freiherr von Barnekow
was in command of Prussia's I. Army Corps in Königsberg for a ten-year period (1873-1883) following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He entered active duty in 1826, enjoying several years of peacetime as he progressed in his military career. Having reached the rank of Generalmajor, Barnekow was involved in the Danish War of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg) but did not lead combat troops in that conflict. Two years later, however, we headed up 2nd Infantry Brigade during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his outstanding leadership.

As Prussia waged war on France in 1870, Generalleutnant von Barnekow headed up the 16th Infantry Division, a unit which was engaged at Spichern, Mars-la-Tour, Gravelotte, Amiens, and St. Quentin. For his meritorious actions, he was decorated with the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, as well as the oak leaves to his previous Blue Max medal. After returning to Germany, Freiherr von Barnekow was transferred to Königsberg in 1873 to replace General von Manteuffel as commanding general of I. Armeekorps, a posting he held until retirement in 1883.
