Wilhelm von Amann was the commander of Prussia's Kadetten-Korps
from 1891 to 1894. Wilhelm volunteered for military service in 1855 with the
Oldenburger Infanterie-Regiment and was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant in
August 1857. During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg),
he participated in the Main Campaign, receiving serious wounds at the Battle
of Werbach. He was a company commander with Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 2 during
the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer Krieg) and was once again
wounded during the Battle of Gravelotte.
In
post-war Imperial Germany, Amann was promoted to Major on 14 January
1879 and appointed Director of the Kriegsschule in Potsdam. He was
transferred in August 1888 to head up Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 12 and in May 1889
was commander of the Haupt-Kadettenanstalt in Groß-Lichterfelde. Kaiser
Wilhelm II. elevated Amann into Prussian nobility status on 22 August 1891, and
in September he was selected to head up the Kadetten-Korps. Von Amann
commanded 9. Infanterie-Brigade in Frankfurt an der Oder from 1894 to 1895 and
35. Division in Graudenz from 1895 to 1899. He was named Gouverneur of Thorn in
June 1899 and brevetted as General der Infanterie on 27 January 1900. He retired
from active duty (zur Disposition gestellt) on 22 March 1902 and was decorated
by the Kaiser with the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle with Oak leaves (Roter
Adlerorden mit Eichenlaub.) Amann's son Friedrich Ludwig served as a
Generalleutnant in the Wehrmacht during World War Two.
