General Constantin von Alvensleben served the Imperial German
Army as commander of the III. Armee-Korps in Berlin. Beginning his career as an Imperial officer
in 1827, he
had previously seen action during the First Schleswig War of 1848, the Danish War of
1864, and the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. In the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, von Alvensleben commanded Prussia's 3. Armee-Korps at Vionville, Gravelotte
and Orléans. In 1892,
he was decorated with Prussia's highest order of chivalry, the Schwarzer
Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle.)
