Georg II. Herzog von
Sachsen-Meiningen H.
(02.04.1826 -
25.06.1914)
place of birth: Meiningen
Herzogtum
Sachsen-Meiningen: Herzog,
General
der Infanterie
Duke Georg II. reigned over the Duchy of Saxen-Meiningen
until his death in June 1914 prior to the outbreak of World War One. He
was succeeded by his son Bernhard III., with whom he had served during
the Franco-German War of 1870-71. Georg II. supported wholeheartedly
the theater arts and culture during his reign, and likewise sought to
reform the political aspects of his duchy. His general political views
and desire for the German States to maintain close ties with England
brought him into conflict with the Hohenzollern leadership.
