Friedrich Prinz von Sachsen-Meiningen was the son of Georg II von Sachsen-Meiningen and Feodora zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg. His older brother Bernhard III succeeded their father Georg II as the last Duke of Sachsen- Meiningen. Prinz Friedrich studied at the University of Bonn and following matriculation pursued a military career as an artillery specialist in the Prussian Army. He retired from active duty in 1913 but was brought back into service during German mobilization, taking command of the 39th Reserve Infantry Brigade. Sadly, the prince was the first Prussian general to be killed in action when he fell victim to a grenade attack near Nalinnes, Belgium. His son Ernst was killed three days later near Maubeuge.
