The last Grand Duke of Hesse, "Ernie" was the eldest son of Grand Duke Ludwig IV and Princess Alice. He was thus Queen Victoria's grandson, as well as the older brother to the ill-fated Russian Tsarina Alexandra. He served as the Inhaber of Infanterie-Regiment Nr.115.

Ernst Ludwig succeeded his father as Grand Duke in 1892 and ruled until the end of World War One when he was forced to abdicate against his will. He died in 1937 at Schloss Wolfsgarten near Langen.
