Reigning Duke of Brunswick from November 1913 until his abdication on 8 November 1918, Ernst August was a direct descendant of Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. He born near Vienna, Austria to Crown Prince Ernst August von Hannover and Princess Thyra of Denmark. Ernst August married Kaiser Wilhelm II's only daughter, Viktoria Luise, in 1913. He later served during the Great at X. Army Corps headquarters, receiving a promotion to Generalmajor in 1917. During the War, his spouse Viktoria Luise oversaw the day-to-day rule of the Duchy.
