Prussian officer Gustav Freiherr von der Wenge served during the Great War as both a staff officer and field general. Oberstleutnant v.d. Wenge arrived in X. Army Corps headquarters Hannover during the pre-War years to replace Erich von Redern as General Otto von Emmich's chief of staff. He remained in this capacity as hostilities broke out in August 1914. During the conflict, v.d. Wenge as Prinz Leopold von Bayern's chief of staff at 9.AOK headquarters, and later served as commander 30th Infantry Division.
