Königreich
Sachsen: Bde-Kdr,
Schutztruppe, Generalleutnant ch. z.D.
General
Kurt Wahle
was a Royal Saxon general officer who served in the Colonial Forces of
German East Africa (Tanzania) during the Great War. Having retired from active
duty prior to the Great War, Wahle was on vacation in Africa when hostilities
broke out in Europe. Instead of returning to Germany, he reported to local
Commander Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and was reactivated as his second in command.
The unusual circumstances led to Wahle as a Generalmajor being subordinate to
Oberstleutnant von Lettow-Vorbeck.
General Wahle
remained active in Africa for the duration of the War. In October 1918, and in
poor health, he was taken captive by the British and was not repatriated until
1919. For his service during the African campaign, he was awarded the
Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) and Kommandeurkreuz II.
(Komtur II) of Saxony's highest military order - the
Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden.
