Royal Saxon general officer Carlotto Vitzthum von Eckstädt was in command of Saxony's mixed Landwehr infantry brigade on 2 August 1914 as Germany entered the Great War. His brigade was subordinate to General von Hausen's Third Army on the Western Front. On 16 September 1914, just a month into the hostilities, Generalleutnant Vitzthum von Eckstädt was wounded in battle at Moronvilliers, France. He was evacuated to Germany for convalescent leave but died of his wounds just one month later, in Chemnitz.
