Royal Saxon General Max von Seydewitz served as a brigade and division-level commander during the Great War. In August 1914, his 89th Infantry Brigade were immediately engaged and under fire as the Third Army pushed through Belgium on the way to northern France. For his exemplary leadership during the early part of campaign on the Western Front, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. In December 1914, von Seydewitz was selected to head up the newly-formed 75th Reserve Division and was immediately redeployed to the Eastern Front, where his troops saw action during the Battle of Masurian Lakes. Generalleutnant von Seydewitz remained on active duty until war's end and was later brevetted as and honorary General der Infanterie.
