General Günther Graf von der Schulenburg was a Saxon cavalry officer who at the outbreak of World War One was in command of the Royal Saxon 8th Cavalry Division. His troops pushed initially into Lorraine, France and were engaged in battle at Nancy-Epinal. Having transferred to the Eastern Front in early September 1914, the division was routed by Russian cavalry along the Warta River. Graf von Schulenburg was then deployed back to Belgium to serve as Commandant and Military Governor of Liège. Poor health ended his career as a cavalry office in late 1916.
