Bavarian cavalry commander Ernst von Schrott was in charge of
2nd Bavarian Cavalry Brigade as Imperial German forces mobilized for World
War One. He soon thereafter was transferred to 4th Bavarian
Infantry Division, which he commanded through the first half of the War.
For his bravery and meritorious leadership in battle, Schrott
was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of
Bavaria's highest military order - the Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden. He
was officially presented with the decoration on 29.03.1915 and later enrolled
into Bavarian nobility, earning the title Ritter von Schrott. Following
his release from active duty, von Schrott additionally received an honorary
promotion to General der Kavallerie.
