Erwin Schramm was an artillery
officer serving in the Royal Saxon military forces during the Great War. He was also an archaeologist
and was known as an authority on ancient artillery equipment.
At mobilization, Schramm commanded
the 32nd Field Artillery Brigade which pushed through neutral Belgium on its way
to the French frontier. For his exemplary leadership, he was awarded the
Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the
Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden.
