Gustav Ritter von Schoch
(25.05.1858 - 06.05.1924)
place of birth:
 (Bavaria)
Königreich Bayern:  Div-Kdr, General der Infanterie ch.

Royal Bavarian general Gustav von Schoch headed up the 5th Bavarian Infantry Division during the first few months of the Great War. Although the titular head of the division, Schoch suffered from depression and remained to the rear, leaving control of the unit to his chief operations officer Julius von Reichert. Attempts to convalesce back in Munich failed, and so Ritter von Schoch was relieved of command in April 1915. All three of his brothers served as generals in the Bavarian Army: Emil, Karl, and Albert.

During peacetime prior to the War, for his meritorious leadership Schoch was awarded the Ritter (Knight class) of the Bavarian crown's order of merit - the Verdienstorden der Bayerischen Krone. The official presentation of the decoration elevated him into Bavarian nobility with the title of "Ritter von Schoch."
