Schutztruppe,
Generalmajor ch.
Kurt Freiherr von Schleinitz
was a Prussian military officer who from 1907 to April 1914 was in command of
Germany's Colonial Protection Forces (Kaiserliche Schutztruppe) based
in German East Africa. Schleinitz began his military career in 1879 and was soon
commissioned as a second lieutenant with a Prussian Guards unit in Berlin. In
1890, he deployed to German East Africa as part of the Colonial Protection
Forces. There he took part in the Maji-Maji Rebellion of 1905-07. Soon
thereafter, Major von Schleinitz replaced Gustav Graf von
Götzen as Schutztruppe commander, an assignment he held until April
1914. Schleinitz was ultimately relieved of command in East Africa for
failing to take action against his local Askari troops who had attacked
civilians.
Following his return to the homeland,
Germany mobilized for the First World War and Oberst z.D. von Schleinitz was
reactivated to serve as a regimental commander. An illness in 1916 forced his
return to Germany for convalescence, but he returned to the Warsaw sector to
function as a staff officer overseeing replacement troops. He ultimately retired
from active duty in March 1918 with the brevet rank of Generalmajor.
