Prussian artillery specialist Graf von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth commanded the Royal Württemberg 27. Infanterie-Division during the first half of World War One. Pfeil initially enlisted in the Prussian military in 1875, serving with a guards unit in Berlin. He received his commission the following year and then changed over to a career as a field artillery officer. He was promoted to Generalleutnant in 1912 and assigned command of 27. Infanterie-Division (2.  Kgl. Württ.) in Ulm.

Graf von Pfeil remained in command of the 27th division as German forces mobilized in August 1914 and marched into battle. Following initial engagements in the extreme northeast of France, his division crossed the Meuse with the 5. Armee and settled in the Argonne region. In 1916, Graf von Pfeil and his men moved to the Ypres Salient, where they were involved in heavy fighting, then moved southward to participate in the Battle of the River Somme. Thereafter, Generalleutnant von Pfeil retired from active duty. He remained listed on Prussia's Seniority List, however, and was dispatched to Berlin to serve the remainder of the War in charge of the Landgendarmerie (Germany's national military police force.) He received the brevet rank of General der Artillerie and oversaw the military police until his final retirement in 1921.
