Just prior to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, infantry officer Alfred Müller was serving as Saxony's military representative at the Imperial Military Court in Berlin. During mobilization, he was recalled to Dresden in order to take command of Reserve-Regiment Nr. 104. For his bravery and leadership during the early part of the campaign in Belgium and northern France, he was awarded both the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) and Kommandeurkreuz II.

During the second half of the Great War, Müller was tasked with commanding the Saxon Infanterie-Brigade Nr. 63 on the Western Front and receiving a promotion to Generalmajor in the spring of 1918. He also briefly sat in as provisional commander of Saxony's Infanterie-Division Nr. 32. Following the Armistice, he remained active as an officer in the Reichswehr and was promoted to Generalleutnant in 1921. In 1925 at the age of 59, Müller lost his life during a live-fire training accident at the Jüterbog training facility. Alfred Müller's son Aribert Müller-Arlès was also a Generalmajor serving in Germany's Wehrmacht.
