Württemberg artillery specialist Wilhelm von Lotterer commanded the Prussian 5. Feldartillerie-Brigade at the outset of World War One, one of the main artillery units assigned to General von Kluck's 1. Armee-Oberkommando. Lotterer gained a reputation for his expertise in providing infantry units with the tailored artillery support they needed. He was thus dispatched to various hotspots along the Western Front to personally advise various commanding generals on optimizing artillery operations. His artillery batteries were providing fire support during the Battle of Fort Douaumont when they came under heavy fire themselves and Generalmajor von Lotterer was fatally wounded. He was laid to rest in Ludwigsburg next to his son Maximilian who had been killed in action in October 1914.
