General Sylvio von Kospoth enlisted in the Royal Saxon Army two days prior to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He took part in the Siege of Paris and was promoted to Sekonde-Lieutenant just a few weeks prior to war's end. In peacetime Saxony, von Kospoth worked his way up to the rank of Generalmajor and was in command of an infantry brigade, before poor health forced him to retire from active duty. August 1914 mobilization saw von Kospoth reactivated to function during the first two years of the War as acting commander at 89th Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Zwickau.
