Royal Bavarian general officer Otto Jäger was in command of Bavaria's 9th Infantry
Brigade as the Germans marched into World War One.
General Jäger remained on the Western
Front through 1916 as commander of this brigade, which was subordinate
to General von Gebsattel's III. Bavarian Army Corps. For his bravery and
meritorious leadership in battle, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of
Bavaria's highest military order - the Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden. He
was officially presented with the decoration on 18.02.1915. As a recipient of
this order, Jäger was
later elevated into
Bavaria's non-hereditary nobility, thereafter carrying the title of Ritter.
He then functioned for the final two years of the War
as the Governor of Germersheim.
