Saxon infantry officer Eduard Hummitzsch was reactivated during the Great War to command a Landwehr regiment on the Eastern Front. He initially joined the Saxon Army in 1866 while his kingdom was at war with the Prussians. He late fought alongside his previous enemy during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He then served for the next 20 years with 7. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 106 in Chemnitz. Hummitzsch was on the verge of receiving his own regimental command when promoted to Oberst in 1895. Instead, he was charged with overseeing the Saxon Army's uniform supply office and decided to retire one year hence.

Upon retiring from active duty, Oberst Hummitzsch was asked to remain in uniform and head up XII. Armee-Korps' Dresden Garrison Administrative Office, and remained in this position from 1896 until 1912. As the Great War got underway, Hummitzsch was reactivated at age 68 in order to command Landwehr-Regiment Nr. 133 on the Eastern Front. He was brevetted to Generalmajor in the summer of 1915 but was soon thereafter severely wounded during fighting north about 50 km north of Brest. For his exemplary leadership during this campaign, he was decorated with the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St. Heinrichs-Orden. He was transported back to Dresden for convalescence but died about two years later at the age of 71.
