Walter von Hülsen
(20.05.1863 - 13.03.1947)
place of birth:  Cosel, Schlesien
Königreich Preußen:  Div-Kdr,  Generalleutnant

Generalleutnant
Walter von Hülsen was a division-level commander for Imperial German forces during World War One. His younger brother was also a division commander in the War. In peacetime Germany, von Hülsen was chiefly active in Guards units. He attended Kriegsakademie in 1889 and was later briefly detached to Prussian Great General Staff. He was given command of 43. Infanterie-Brigade headquarters in Kassel about one month prior to general mobilization.

Generalmajor von Hülsen and his 43. Brigade troops marched into battle on 2 August 1914, subordinate to Karl Dieffenbach's 22. Infanterie-Division. They were soon engaged in overtaking the Fortress at Liege, Belgium, and it was there that von Hülsen was injured during a bayonet attack. He quickly recovered, however, and was able to rejoin his brigade by 25 August as they were preparing the assault on Namur. Following this engagement, von Hülsen and his troops were transshipped to the Eastern Front where they were soon fighting in the Masurian Lakes campaign. While still deployed East, he took over in July 1916 for Max von Schmettau as 19. Infanterie-Division commander, but soon returned to the trenches of Northern France.

Generalleutnant von Hülsen and his soldiers were successful enough during Germany's Spring Offensive of 1918, that he was recognized with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. After the signing of the November 1918 peace treaty, he remained in uniform serving with the Reichswehr and attaining the rank of General der Infanterie. General von Hülsen retired from active duty in August 1921.
