General Kurt Hempel was a Royal Saxon brigade commander during peace time prior to the Great War. He retired from active duty in early 1914, but as Imperial German forces mobilized for war in summer 1914, Hempel was reactivated as a brevet Generalleutnant z.D.  He immediately took the reigns of the 46th Reserve-Infantry-Brigade, a Saxon unit subordinate to 23rd Reserve Infantry Division. For his exemplary leadership during the early part of campaign on the Western Front, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. Hempel remained at the brigade's helm until January 1916 when poor health forced him to permanently retire.
