George Louis von Engelbrechten
(30.04.1855 - 06.10.1935)
place of birth:  Neustadt am Rübenberge
Königreich Preußen:  Div-Kdr,  Generalleutnant

Prussian General George von Engelbrechten was a divisional commander and Pour le Mérite winner during the Great War. George's father Karl had previously served as an officer in a Hanoverian regiment, while his older brother Maximilian was also a Generalleutnant in the Prussian military.

As Germany marched to war on 2 August 1914, Generalmajor von Engelbrechten was in command of 69. Infanterie-Brigade as part of General von Mackensen's XVII. Armee-Korps. Engelbrechten's troops thus deployed to the Eastern Front where they saw immediate action at Gumbinnen and later during the Battle of Tannenberg. In March of the following year, von Engelbrechten was transferred west to head up the newly-formed 50. Infanterie-Division which was then deployed to battle in the trenches of the Champagne region. After approximately one year of stalemate fighting, the division was redeployed to the hills north of Verdun where from April through November 1916 they were engaged in the War's longest continuous campaign. The 50th ID also participated in the storming of Fort Vaux. After promotion to Generalleutnant in 1917, Engelbrechten's division joined 18. Armee for engagement in the great Spring Offensive of 1918. For his distinguished service and leadership during this campaign, Generalleutnant von Engelbrechten was decorated in with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. Following the Armistice in November, the general retired in January and was brevetted to the rank of General der Infanterie.
