Royal Bavarian General Felix Ritter von Eder came out of of retirement in late 1915 to command Bavaria's 1st Landwehr Division for the remainder of the Great War. During peacetime, Ritter von Eder had been been in command of 11th Bavarian Infantry Brigade and the military governor of Fortress Ingolstadt.
For his meritorious leadership, he was awarded in August 1918 the Großkomtur (Grand Commander class) of the Bavarian crown's order of merit - the Verdienstorden der Bayerischen Krone. The official presentation of the decoration elevated him into Bavarian nobility with the title of "Ritter von Eder."
