Generalleutnant ch. z.D.
General
Hans von Carlowitz
served as a Royal Saxon brigade-level commander who retired from active duty
prior to the outbreak the
Great War. After mobilization in August 1914, Carlowitz took over 45th Reserve
Brigade which was fighting in the Champagne area. For his exemplary
leadership during the early part of that campaign, he was awarded the
Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the
Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. Following his engagement on the Western Front, von Carlowitz was
redeployed to
occupied Poland to function as a local military governor. He should not be
confused with Saxon War Minister Hans Adolf von
Carlowitz (1858-1928) or Saxon Chief of General Staff
Hans Anton Adolf von Carlowitz (1849-1904).
