Prussian infantry commander Generalleutnant Hasso von Bredow lead the 42. Infanterie-Division on both the Western and Eastern Fronts during the first two years of the Great War. Born into the family of a Prussian colonel and raised in Cologne, Hasso enlisted into the military service as the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was underway. He took part in several notable battles, including Le Mans and the siege of Metz. Following the War, Bredow was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant and later graduated from Prussian War Academy in 1880. He did not serve on Great General Staff, and followed an otherwise traditional infantry officer career, ultimately helping in 1912 to establish headquarters of the newly-formed 42. Infanterie-Division in Saarburg.

It was with the 42nd Division that Generalleutnant von Bredow marched into battle in August 1914. His soldiers at first fought along the frontiers in support of 6. Armee. They were redeployed in early 1915 and took part in the Winter Battle of Masurian Lakes. A year later in March of 1916 Bredow's formation fought in support of Eichhorn's 10. Armee during the Lake Narach Offensive in Russia. The Russian attack ended up in complete failure, but Bredow was nonetheless relieved of his command and became an Officer of the Army. He soon retired from active duty at the age of 64 and was brevetted to the rank of General der Infanterie.
