Prussian general Bernhard Boëß served during the First World War as a brigade- and division-level commander. He began his military career in 1875 when he joined Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 64. After graduating from War College in 1890, Boëß spent about ten years working as a Prussian General Staff officer, with assignments to IV. Armee-Korps headquarters and as an inspector of railways in Saarbrücken.

Two weeks prior to August 1914 mobilization, Generalmajor Boëß was assigned to command 4. Infanterie-Brigade and soon led them into battle along the Russian frontier as part of Falk's 2. Infanterie-Division. Defending against the Russian 1. Armee onslaught, he and his brigade were engaged in fighting at Stallupönen and Gumbinnen. In late August, they additionally took part in the legendary Battle of Tannenberg where the Germans were able to successfully route Samsonov's 2. Armee. The following month, his brigade was once again involved in heavy fighting in the First Battle of Masurian Lakes. One Christmas Even 1914, Boëß took command of the newly-formed 79. Reserve-Division. This unit was soon able to distinguish themselves in February 1915 during the Winter Battle of the Masurian Lakes and the destruction of the Russian 10. Armee. He remained in command on the Eastern Front until and in May 1917 was promoted to Generalleutnant, conferring him the title of Exzellenz (Excellency.) Boëß was then transferred to the Flanders region to replace General von Hertzberg as 11. Reserve-Division commander.
