General August Bierling served as a Royal Saxon artillery officer who spent about one-third of his pre-War career with the Saxon War Ministry. He also commanded at the brigade level prior to retiring from active duty in 1912. He was recalled following German mobilization to command a reserve field artillery regiment. For his exemplary leadership of this unit during battle in Flanders, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) of Saxony's highest military order - the Militär-St-Heinrich-Orden. He was soon transferred to command of a reserve field artillery brigade and was awarded the Kommandeurkreuz II class of the MSHO for distinguishing himself during the 1916 Battle of the Somme. In early 1917, he again retired from active duty, this time due to health problems.
