(18.04.1847 - 13.03.1919)
place of birth: Wertheim (Bavaria)

Bayern: Oberststallmeister, Oberstjägermeister, Generalleutnant
ch. (Kav)
Graf Wolffskeel von Reichenberg was an Imperial
Bavarian count and general who served Bavaria's royal family as both Oberststallmeister, Chief
Master of the Horse at Munich's royal stables as well as Oberstjägermeister,
Grand Master of the Hunt. He carried the additional
role of curator and asset manager for King Otto I.
Karl
Wolffskeel entered Bavarian military service in 1866 as the
Austro-Prussian War was starting up. He also saw action during the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. After the hostilities, the young cavalry officer
saw promotions to Premier-Lieutenant and then Rittmeister (captain). Wolffskeel
then entered into the service of the Bavarian Royal Court as aide-de-camp to
Army Inspector General Prince Luitpold.
Wolffskeel thus became
close friend and confidant to Prince Luitpold; he remained as such when in 1886
Luitpold became Prince-Regent in order to succeed Ludwig II as
Bavaria's ruler. As Oberststallmeister, Wolffskeel was charged with the
administration of the Marstall, Bavaria's royal stables. He was
additionally responsible for managing the estate of King Otto I, who had been
deemed incapable of assuming the Bavarian throne. For his service to the royal
house, Generalmajor Wolffskeel was elevated into the Bavarian nobility in 1901
on the occasion of Luitpold's 80th birthday. This honor precipitated changing
the spelling of his original family name Wolfskeel, to Wolffskeel.
In June 1903, he received the honorary rank of Generalleutnant and was placed
ā la suite der Armee.
Graf Wolffskeel continued
in the Prince Regent's service until December 1912, when his long-time
friend Luitpold was laid to rest. Although Wolffskeel then stepped down from his
duties as Oberststallmeister, he remained as curator of Otto's estate
as Bavaria went to War in 1914 and until the king's unexpected death in October
1916.
