Prussian General der Infanterie Hermann von Strantz commanded V. Armee-Korps and Armee-Abteilung Strantz (C) throughout the better part of the Great War. He spent much of his pre-war military career engaged in staff work in Frankfurt a.d. Oder and Berlin. Strantz additionally commanded 25. Infanterie-Division in Darmstadt and ultimately received command of V. Armee-Korps headquarters in Posen three years prior to War's outbreak. It was with this formation that he marched into battle, subordinate to Crown Prince Wilhelm's 5. Armee.

General von Strantz and his troops were engaged early on in the Western Front. He also headed up Armee-Abteilung Strantz (C), a detachment formed from the left wing of the 5. Armee.  For his distinguished service and leadership during this campaign General Strantz was decorated in August 1915 with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. In the summer of 1916 at Verdun, where they were ordered to capture Fort Troyon and force a crossing of the river Meuse. One of Strantz' staff officers while at Verdun was the 36-year old captain Wilhelm List, who later served as a Wehrmacht army group commander during World War Two. General von Strantz retired from active military service in March 1917 and after the War passed away in November 1936.
