Boje Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus von Scholtz
(24.03.1851 - 30.04.1927)
place of birth:  Flensburg, Schleswig
Königreich Preußen:  OBH,  General der Artillerie

Imperial German artillery specialist Friedrich von Scholtz served during the Great War as a corps and field army commander. As a teenager in 1870, Scholtz was attending the military academy in Potsdam when Prussia went to war with the French. He left the academy to volunteer with Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 9 in Rendsburg. The regiment soon deployed to France, where Scholtz fought as a gunner in the same artillery battery alongside future German general Max von Gallwitz.

Following the hostilities, Scholtz returned to Potsdam to finish his studies at the academy and then returned to Schleswig with an assignment to rejoin the 9th artillery. Spending the next 14 years with the regiment, he meanwhile completed studies at the Prussian Artillery and Engineering School, as well as the Prussian War Academy in Berlin. Scholtz then spent a total of 15 years during peace-time as a general staff officer, with an assignment as General von Lindequist's chief of staff at XVIII. Armee-Korps headquarters in Frankfurt am Main (1899-1903.) After a 3-year tour as a brigade commander, Generalmajor Scholtz returned to the General Staff of the Army to serve as one Helmut von Moltke's four Senior Quartermasters (Ober-Quartiermeister.) Scholtz was subsequently promoted to Generalleutnant to command 21. Infanterie-Division (1909-1912) and then to General der Artillerie with an assignment as commander of the newly-formed XX. Armee-Korps in Allenstein. On the occasion of Kaiser Wilhelm II's 25th year on the throne, General von Scholtz was elevated in June 1913 into the hereditary Prussian nobility.

With Germany mobilizing in August 1914, Scholtz lead his XX. Armee-Korps into battle against the Russian onslaught on the Eastern Front. In support of Field Marshal Hindenburg's 8. Armee, von Scholtz's troops played a pivotal role during the battles at Tannenberg and at Masurian Lakes. Scholtz and his corps then remained under Hindenburg as he took command of 9. Armee and pushed into southern Poland. Remaining in command of XX. Armee-Korps, Scholtz was given the additional assignment in May 1915 as acting commander of 8. Armee headquarters. During that summer, the Germans were able to push retreating Russian units eastward, eventually crossing the River Nemen (Memel) to capture the stronghold of Grodno. For his distinguished service and leadership during this campaign General Scholtz was decorated in with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. Upon reaching Dünaburg (Daugavpils, Latvia,) in October 1915, Scholtz and his soldiers formed into Armee-Abteilung D, also known as Armee-Abteilung Scholtz. Remaining in the area of Courland (Kurland) for several months, he took command of Heeres-Gruppe Below in 1917 to form Heeres-Gruppe Scholtz. The formation redeployed south to the Macedonia front in order to fight under Bulgarian Supreme Command. General von Scholtz retired a few weeks after the Armistice was signed and passed away in 1927 in his hometown of Ballenstedt-Harz.
