German General der Kavallerie Prinz zu Salm-Horstmar served
in Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s military entourage as an adjutant general. His
father was Prince Wilhelm zu Salm-Horstmar and mother was Princess
Elisabeth zu Solms-Rödelheim. The prince saw his first military action in the
Danish War of 1864 (Deutsch-Dänischer Krieg). During the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866 (Deutscher Krieg), Salm-Horstmar functioned as an ordnance officer fighting under General
Herwarth von Bittenfeld, commander of the Army of the Elbe. He likewise
took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 (Deutsch-Französischer
Krieg), serving as a squadron commander in the cavalry. During the
Great War, General der Kavallerie Prinz zu Salm-Horstmar continued his service as
adjutant general in Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s royal suite.
