General der Infanterie Ferdinand von Quast was an Imperial German corps- and field army-level commander during the First World War. Quast grew up near Neuruppin in the central part of Brandenburg. As a teenager, he launched his 50-year military career in 1870 just as German troops were marching into the Franco-Prussian War. As a Leutnant in the Kaiser Franz Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 2, a unit he would serve with for over twenty years, Quast was decorated for his distinguished service with Prussia's Iron Cross 2nd Class.

In peacetime Germany, Quast maintained a fairly unremarkable career, advancing through the ranks while serving in three different Guards regiments in Berlin. By 1907, however, he was promoted to Generalmajor and received command of 39. Infanterie-Brigade in Hannover. He was in command of IX. Armee-Korps headquarters in Altona as Germany mobilized for the Great War in August 1914. General von Quast spent the initial three years of the War cultivating a reputation for his aggressive command of his corps, which fought as part of von Kluck's 1. Armee-Oberkommando. For his distinguished service and leadership during the 1916 Battle of the Somme, Quast was decorated with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. Quast replaced Otto von Below as commander of 6. Armee-Oberkommando for the final twelve months of the conflict. He passed away in Potsdam in 1939 at the age of 88 years.
