Gustav Heinrich Ernst Friedrich von Ingenohl
(30.06.1857 - 19.12.1933)
place of birth:
 Neuwied
Königreich Preußen:  Chef der Hochseeflotte,  Admiral a la Suite SM,  Admiral

Admiral Friedrich von Ingenohl was the Chief of the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet (Hochseeflotte) during the initial phase of World War One. Friedrich enlisted in the Imperial Navy in 1874, sailing the Pacific Far East for several years.  Prior to the Great War, Ingenohl also served as captain of the Kaiser Wilhelm II.'s personal state yacht, the SMY Hohenzollern, from 1904 to 1908. He had additional duties during this time as an aide-de-camp in the Kaiser's royal suite, and was elevated to Admiral à la suite in September 1907 with his promotion to Kontre-Admiral.

Following almost three years as commander of Imperial Germany's Kreuzergeschwader (cruiser squadron) in the Pacific, Ingenohl was selected in January 1913 to head up the Imperial High Seas Fleet and its flag ship the SMS Friedrich der Große. As Germany mobilized for War in the summer of 1914, Admiral von Ingenohl's intention of immediately confronting the British Navy in a decisive engagement put him at loggerheads with the German Admiralty. Subsequent naval battles at Heligoland in August 1914 and at Dogger Bank in January 1915 were both largely unsuccessful for the Germans, and Ingenohl was forced to relinquish his command to Admiral von Pohl on 2 February 1915.  He then took charge of the Baltic Sea Naval Station, but retired from active duty after a few short months. The Allies called for Ingenohl's extradition after the War to face war crimes charges, but Germany refused to comply.
