Freiherr von Hammerstein-Loxten was a retired Prussian general who during the Great War oversaw the Invalidenhaus in Berlin, Germany's national facility for disabled military veterans. He initially joined a Hanoverian Army regiment in 1857 and was engaged against the Prussians during the War of 1866. After annexation, he switched to service in the Royal Prussian Army and fought with them during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He thereafter rose through the ranks serving in various Guards units.

Having commanded an infantry division for his final four years of duty, Hammerstein retired and was immediately posted to head up of the Landgendarmerie, Prussia's national military police. In 1904, he was selected as Governor of the Invalidenhaus and remained there for the entirety of the ensuing War.
