German general Johannes von Eben commanded troops at the corps and field army level during the Great War. Eben joined the Prussian Army in 1873 when he was assigned to Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 76 in Hamburg. He remained with this regiment for the subsequent 16 years, spending a three-year period attending the Royal Prussian War College in Berlin. He later served five years as an instructor at the War College and in 1903 was chosen to head up the Army Section (A1) at the War Ministry. Kaiser Wilhelm II. then awarded Oberst Eben  by having him elevated into Prussia's hereditary nobility. In 1912, he was promoted to Generalleutnant and assigned command of 30. Infanterie-Division headquarters in Straßburg.

 Marching into battle with this division in August 1914, von Eben's soldiers were initially engaged against the French in Alsace-Lorraine and subordinate to Generaloberst von Heeringen's 7. Armee. Toward the end of August, von Eben was promoted to General der Infanterie and redeployed further west to relieve the wounded Günther Graf von Kirchbach as head of X. Reserve-Korps. By summer 1915, he was in charge of I. Armee-Korps, receiving the Pour le Merite for outstanding military leadership in Galicia and for his cooperation with the Austro-Hungarian 2. Armee to halt the Brusilov Offensive in 1916. General von Eben also distinguished himself at the Battle of Zborov. He later led the 9. Armee-Oberkommando with distinction during the occupation of Romania (1917-18) and briefly commanded Army Detachment-A in Alsace in 1918. After the War, General von Eben briefly commanded I. Armee-Korps in Königsberg then retired from active duty in February 1919. He passed away on 30 June 1924 at his Bauditten estate in Mohrungen.
