Hans und Edler Ritter von Braun was a Imperial German regimental commander and army corps chief of staff during the First World War. Brought up in Germany's Baden region, Braun launched his military career in 1885 when he enlisted in Freiburg's Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 113. In peace time, Braun served for about seven years with the General Staff of the Army, as well as in Prussia's War Ministry. As a Major, he also functioned for almost four years as Grand Duke Friedrich II. of Baden's military aide-de-camp.

When German troops mobilized for War in August 1914, Oberstleutnant von Braun was picked to command 13. Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment, part of Karl von Bülow's 2. Armee. Braun's soldiers were some of the first to enter Belgium and took part in the battles for the Liege fortress, as well as the subsequent march through Belgium and into northern France. He was transferred in early 1915 to IV. Reserve-Korps headquarters to function as Hans von Gronau's corps chief of staff until August of that year. Having been promoted to Oberst, von Braun returned to Berlin, where he remained engaged at the Prussian War Ministry for the remainder of the Great War. Following the hostilities, Generalmajor von Braun remained at the War Ministry and became the Reichswehr's first director of the Heeres-Personalamt (Army Personnel Office), December 1919 to April 1922. He retired from active duty in 1922 as a Generalleutnant.
