Prussian Army officer Hans Ritter von Braun commanded the 13th Infantry Regiment at the outset of World War One. His troops were some of the first to enter Belgium and took part in the battles for the Liege fortress, as well as the continued march through Belgium and into northern France. He was transferred in early 1915 to IV. Reserve Corps headquarters to function as chief of staff until August of that year. Ritter von Braun then returned to Berlin, where he remained engaged at the Prussian War Ministry for the remainder of the Great War. Following the hostilities, von Braun was kept on at the War Ministry and became the Reichswehr's first director of the Heeres-Personalamt (Army Personnel Office), December 1919 to April 1922.
