Prussian Generaloberst z.D. Max von Boehn was brought out of retirement to command Germany's IX. Reserve-Korps during the Great War. Max was born into a family of high-ranking military officers, his father Julius serving as a brigade commander, while his uncle Oktavio von Boehn commanded at the army corps level. Max's brother Hans was also a general during the Great War. Boehn entered military service in 1867 joining up with 3. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß in Hannover. He deployed to France as a combatant in the Franco-Prussian War and was later decorated with the Iron Cross 2nd Class. In peace-time Germany, Boehn spent most of his years assigned to guards units. Despite not having attended Prussian War College or serving at General Staff headquarters, he was still able to progress in his career and command an infantry division by 1905. Following promotion to General der Infanterie, he as assigned to oversee the Imperial fortress at Ulm and in late 1912 retired from active duty.

As Germany mobilized in August 1914, General von Boehn was recalled to take leadership of IX. Reserve-Korps, initially part of the Nord-Armee defending the Schleswig-Holstein coastline. His reservists later redeployed to Belgium and France to participate in the siege of Antwerp and in the summer of 1916 the Battle of the Somme. For his outstanding leadership during the Somme campaign, General von Boehn was decorated with the highest Royal Prussian order of bravery, the Pour le Mérite. As commander of the 7. Armee, he defended against Allied offensives along the Aisne (1917), at Chemin des Dames (1918) and at the Second Marne (1918).  Boehn was a major contributor to Germany's victory during the Third Battle of the Aisne. Just prior to War's end, Boehn was promoted to Generaloberst in 1918, then later that summer was decorated with Prussia's highest order of chivalry, the Schwarzer Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle.)
