Karl Surén was an Imperial German general who during the Great War commanded XVII. Reserve-Korps for one year and later commanded General-Kommando Nr. 61 for the war's final two years. Surén was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant in 1878 and assigned to the regiment in Schweidnitz. After graduating from the War College in 1890, he spent about eleven years serving at General Staff headquarters with additional assignments as division-level and corps-level operations officer (First General Staff Officer.)

Surén was promoted to Generalmajor in 1912 and given command of 22. Infanterie-Brigade until Germany mobilized for War in August 1914. At that point, he was transferred to command 11. Reserve-Division for the initial push into Northeastern France and in support of the Crown Prince's 5. Armee. In November Surén took charge of 30. Infanterie-Division for a few weeks while those troops were settling into trench warfare along the Yser River in Flanders. He received a wartime promotion to Generalleutnant in early 1915, conferring him the title of Exzellenz (Excellency) and transferring him to the Eastern Front. Surén headed up Landwehr divisions as they were fighting near Przasnysz, Poland and moving northward toward Vilnius. He commanded XVII. Reserve-Korps until September 1916. He established the formation General-Kommando z.b.V. Nr. 61 in November 1916 and led those troops in engagements along the Macedonian Front until War's end.
