Imperial German general officer Karl Surén served as commander of 11th Reserve Division at the outbreak of the Great War. His troops went to battle in support of the Crown Prince's Fifth Army. General Surén was promoted to corps commander in December 1914, leading XVII. and XXV. Reserves over the next two years. He was then transferred to command Generalkommando z.b.V. Nr.61 until war's end.
